Railway Photography – Naotaka Hirota
The definitive masterpiece and life’s work of railway photographer Naotaka Hirota
Naotaka Hirota (born 1935) is a pioneer of railway photography in Japan, revered by photographers and rail enthusiasts alike and often referred to with admiration as a “god” or “legend” in the field.
Beginning his career in the late 1950s—when railway photography was still largely unknown in Japan—Hirota went on to hold Steam Locomotives in 1968, widely regarded as the first-ever railway photography exhibition. He subsequently led major movements such as the steam locomotive boom and the Blue Train boom.
With more than 200 published books to his name, Hirota has remained a leading figure in railway photography across generations. This volume stands as the culmination and definitive edition of his extraordinary career.
For this book, Hirota revisited hundreds of thousands of photographs taken over the years, carefully selecting approximately 400 works arranged chronologically—from black-and-white film to color film, and finally to digital photography.
Every image is a masterpiece long admired by railway fans, including many previously unpublished works. The collection also serves as a valuable historical record, capturing trains, landscapes, and railway lines that can no longer be seen today.
In the final section, Hirota provides commentary on his own works, revealing in detail the shooting techniques he pioneered—such as panning photography and “motion-still” photography—which captivated countless fans.
This richly varied collection showcases how Hirota elevated railway photography to the realm of art.
