Bringing Japan’s Seasonal Beauty to Your Desk

At Hachimonjiya, we see stationery as more than just writing tools—it’s a way to express oneself and appreciate the beauty in everyday moments. Our journey into original stationery began with a desire to bottle the stunning seasonal colors of our home region in Japan into inks.

Inspired by the soft pinks of spring blossoms, the whiteness of the first snowfall, the vibrant reds of ripened fruit, and more, our first creation was a series of original inks reflecting these natural transitions. This passion for color soon expanded into a collection of finely crafted stationery, including fountain pens, notebooks, and writing accessories designed to elevate the writing experience.

Our Story

Founded in 1695 .
Hachimonjiya began by bringing Ukiyo-zōshi from Kyoto (then known as Kamigata) to Yamagata through the trade of safflower, a local specialty. Ukiyo-zōshi was a literary genre that developed during the Edo period and later became the foundation of modern novels.

In the early Meiji period, we ventured into publishing, starting with textbooks.
In 1968, our current main store was built. With its large scale, diverse product lineup beyond just books, and the inclusion of a café, it became a pioneer of "complex bookstores." We are also committed to stationery, selecting high-quality and innovative products with great care.

Today, we operate bookstores in various complex formats, along with an online store.
Our store designs incorporate three-dimensional displays, shelves inclined to match eye level, and children's book areas resembling playgrounds, all with the intent to provide "surprise, discovery, and emotion."
