This work depicts the garden of the house Claude Monet rented in the village of Vétheuil, on the right bank of the Seine northwest of Paris. After the death of his wife, Camille, who left behind their two sons, Monet fell into deep grief. This painting was created during a period when he was gradually recovering, supported devotedly by Alice Hoschedé, who would later become his second wife. With its delicate brushwork, the painting beautifully captures the brilliant sunlight and the vibrant bloom of sunflowers.
