Work summary
"Busy Night"
On a beautiful starry night, Grandma Baba felt it was a waste to stay inside the house, so she took her rocking chair outside to watch the stars. Then she saw the moon coming out of the forest in the distance, and decided to sleep outside instead. So she took out her bed, blankets, pillows, tea utensils, table, microwave, and finally everything else in the house. This is Grandma Baba's first picture book.
"Watermelon Seeds"
Grandma Ba-ba sowed a watermelon seed in the garden. The cat saw it and dug it up, but it was just a seed, so he said it was boring and put it back in the garden. The dog, rabbit, fox, and Grandma Ba-ba all did the same thing, so the watermelon seed finally got angry and said, "Enough is enough." Grandma Ba-ba scolded the seed, telling it to "grow big," and things got complicated. Frustrated, the watermelon grew vigorously, and began to grow vines rapidly!
"Mountain Climbing"
It's spring, and the weather is nice, so Grandma decided to go mountain climbing. When she puts on her backpack with a packed lunch, a water bottle, and some snacks, the animals of the forest gather around her, carrying a lot of luggage: toys, balls, trumpets, pots, plates, buckets, blankets, tents... There's no way she can take all this stuff up the mountain. After thinking it over, Grandma decided to turn the roof of her house into a mountain...
"The Ocean Festival"
Let's all go to a festival at the sea! This is the latest work in the popular "Grandma's Picture Book" series! This time, Grandma and her friends go to wake up a whale that has fallen asleep on the beach. The author, Wakiko Sato, has been mulling over the idea of a "picture book about a festival at the sea" for many years. After visiting the aquarium and continuing to observe, she finally completed this lively and fun picture book with many singing and dancing sea creatures!
"Yomogi dumplings"
Grandma will teach us where spring-blooming wild plants such as mugwort, shepherd's purse, horsetail, and parsley grow and how to find them. It is important to pre-process the wild plants we collect by boiling or soaking them in water. Don't forget to pre-boil the mugwort as well, then cut it into small pieces, mash it, and mix it with shiratama flour to make mugwort dumplings. We'll dip the mugwort dumplings we've made into lots of pieces, dipping them in soybean flour or red bean paste, and enjoy!
"Duck's Egg"
One day, when Grandma comes home with a baby in her arms, the puppy dog and kitten assume she is sick and go to tell the animals in the forest. The animals rush over with gifts to get well. Just then, the duck also hurries over. Grandma has been keeping warm some duck eggs that have been left abandoned in the field. Soon a chick hatches from the egg, and everyone decides to have a birthday party.
"Strawberry Picking"
Grandma goes out to pick wild strawberries to make delicious jam. On the way home, she picks a basket full, and when she starts picking just one, she finds that the strawberries are all gone... But there's no need to worry. The next day, the little dog, the little cat, and the forest animals all join her in the fun of picking more strawberries.
